We're all mad here
so, there’s this really interesting thing about hermione and luna’s relationship that just hit me.
luna is a bit outcast-y because of her beliefs in creatures that, according to hermione, don’t exist. that’s a source of conflict between hermione and luna and is a really big line drawn between their personalities: hermione is the almost-ravenclaw gryffindor and is the brightest witch of her age and luna is actually a ravenclaw, but is more of a creative and imaginative free-spirit than a know-it-all bookworm.
so, the reason hermione doesn’t like luna is because of luna’s fascination with things that don’t exist, which is hysterical because hermione is a witch.
so, hermione does this funny thing where she’s a muggleborn witch, who was probably fascinated by the idea of magic when she was younger, but scoffs at luna for believing in far-fetched things that hemione can’t prove don’t exist.
if hermione was actually a muggle instead of a muggleborn witch, she would scoff at the idea that magic is real and would outright refuse to believe it unless she had concrete proof, which she never would because muggle magic is convincing enough and she wouldn’t believe that was real, so she wouldn’t be convinced that wizard magic is anything more than a muggle magic trick. but she is a witch. and in hermione’s mind that’s fact.
but i don’t understand how muggleborn hermione, a brilliant and powerful witch, can be magical and still scoff at someone for believing in something that may or may not exist in her new world when she, herself, comes from a world where magic isn’t real and when she finds out it is and that she can do magic, she believes it.
like, it’s hypocritical. young hermione probably read a lot of books (this matilda post is the first that comes to mind) and imagined all sorts of things like faraway places and fantastic creatures, but she was sensible enough to know that they don’t exist - in her world. but once she finds out she’s a witch, her view changes and she now believes that magic exists and that she is a witch.
so why, in all her magical being-ness, can’t she fathom the idea that a creature possibly exists in her world - or another world completely - instead of crushing an innocent classmate’s dreams? was the shock of being a witch not great enough to ignite open-mindedness in her muggle brain?
I suppose that we could say that when the Ministry representative showed up when Hermione was eleven to talk about Hogwarts with her family, Hermione accepted it because the Ministry representative was essentially giving her a new theory to explain her magical abilities that made more sense than anything else (JKR does say that the Ministry sends a representative to the parents of Muggle-borns to explain things and that they’re usually receptive because of noticing odd things about their children.) I could definitely imagine a young skeptical Hermione requiring proof from the Ministry representative, though - insisting on a demonstration of magic with their wand, wanting to know how it worked, working out that it wasn’t some sort of Muggle magic trick that could be explained away.
Because fundamentally, Hermione’s very observation/scientific-method oriented - she wants to observe things, she wants proof, she wants facts and concrete things that fit into her belief system. I’d imagine that at age eleven, she expanded her worldview to include magic - and then set out to find out all she could about magic and what was possible within that new world, and then steadfastly refused to expand any further. (Part of that, I would think, is just innately Hermione: she’s very scientific-method, logically-oriented by nature. Part of it, though, might also be something else that’s innately Hermione: deep down, she’s insecure. She wants to be accepted. She hates being laughed at - see her crying in the toilet because Ron’s made fun of her during PS/SS, or the way that she tries to connect with other people through showing off. I would imagine that part of her refusal to accept the impossible might be a fear of looking stupid or credulous in this new world - after all, she’s not like Ron, she doesn’t innately know what’s possible or impossible in the magical world. So she does her best to research what’s possible, and then sticks to believing what she knows to be true within that new world - not only because she needs that proof to believe things, but because she wouldn’t want to be laughed at for not knowing what’s impossible within the Wizarding World.
That’s one other huge difference between Hermione and Luna: Hermione cares what other people think of her, where Luna doesn’t. But they do have some things in common: in their initial introductions, both Luna and Hermione are outcasts who desperately want friends (although Luna as an outcast in Ravenclaw is still jarring given what the House is supposed to be, per Pottermore and JKR, and I wish we had some sort of explanation for how, exactly, that happened), they’re both creative, they both have endeavors that everyone else in Hogwarts thinks are odd (Hermione’s work with SPEW, Luna’s conspiracy theories and imaginary creatures.) Also, book!Luna is certainly capable of close-mindedness in her own way - challenge her beliefs, ask for proof or disagree with her, and she tends to get reactionary and defensive.
(Side note: part of me really wants fanfic of some poor beleagured Ministry employee whose job is to go to Muggle-borns’ households and explain magic to them. “The Misadventures of Mortimer Macmillan, Ministry Man for Meeting and Managing Magic of Muggle-born Minors” or something along those lines could be hilarious, especially with some new hopeful Ministry representative imagining that this is going to be a delightful job involving bringing the joys of magic to eleven-year-olds and ending up having to meet with people like the Dursleys, having the police called on them, getting a little skeptic or aspiring engineer who’s all “what d’you mean you don’t have electricity?” or people who are decidedly not at all like the Muggles in the pamphlet he looked at in fifth year during career advice.)
#in which Bruce Banner finally finds somebody who isn’t afraid to kid around with him #because he has a sense of humour after all #’i’m sorry, that was mean’ anyone? #but everybody tiptoes around him because ‘oh shit, he’s a monster’ #but then he meets Tony #someone who’s not afraid to be around him #someone who might actually be a friend #and that means so much to him and permeates so deep that even when he’s the fucking Hulk he still wants to save Tony’s ass #because by not treating the Hulk like a monster, Tony stopped him from being one

cool advice too all girls: unlearn internalized misogyny and surround urself with other girls and do fun things together like…. for example… form into one giant “super girl” and destroy the world
So wait, Laika used same-sex couples in their trailers but not in the actual movie?
That’s… not cool.
And almost like they were using the the progressive rep they’d earned from a single joke in ParaNorman to promote their next movie without any intention of actually following through and providing positive queer representation in the actual narrative.
Okay. Duly noted.
Yeah. That and with the other transmisogynist crap that IS in the actual movie? It’s incredibly disappointing.
They turned RNA into an anti-virus program. That is amazing.
Let me restate this in case it didn’t sink in the first time
Researchers physically DELETED ALL TRACES of the HIV virus from a human cell.
ALL OF IT.
IF YOU ARE NOT EXCITED ABOUT THAT I DON’T THINK YOU KNOW WHAT HIV IS
ARE WE NOT GOING TO DISCUSS HOW SHE FOLDED HER HIJABS TO LOOK LIKE THE HAIR OF THE CHARACTER, THAT IS SUCH A LOVELY AND GREAT IDEA. OHMYGOD
I don’t know what I was expecting
If you’re feeling sad, please watch this.
I feel like very few, or at least not many of the people of tumblr are aware of what is going on in my home country Hong Kong right now.
You guys gave alot of coverage and support when Scotland was voting for its independance, so I’m hoping you’ll all support the people of Hong Kong as well.
Right now, many of us are in a mass demonstration of pro-democracy against China. But wait a sec, isn’t Hong Kong China? This is a big misconception amongst foreigners, but please, we are far from being similar to China at all.
A little history class: Hong Kong used to be colonized by the British, and before you white-knights begin going all “them damn white racist ppl taking over another asian country” please don’t. We are thankful Britain took us under its wing and instilled in us values that I feel made us what we are today; that is, a democratic people with respect for free speech, amongst many things.
On the other hand, China is communist, with government controlled media and news. Google, instagram, facebook and many tv shows are blocked in China. It really is just a few steps from North Korea imo.
So what’s the problem here? Britain unfortunately had to hand back Hong Kong to China, but one of the requirements is that Hong Kong be allowed to operate as ‘one country two systems’, meaning Hong Kong should be able to have its own democratic government. But China has broken its promise. A while back, China tried to put a mandatory ‘national education’ curriculum in all our primary schools. We all know what that is; a communist brainwashing regime. And now, they have announced that in 2017 Hong Kong will be able to vote for its president; BUT only from 3 candidates hand picked by its PRO-BEIJING legislation.
As you can see, China is trying to takeover completely and turn us into another communist state.
Of course, we have taken to the streets. In a mirror if the Tiananmen protests, students have also stepped up to fight for our rights and our future, albeit in a peaceful protest of course. But the police force who have always been a friend of the people, are now responding with force, something that had never been done before in Hong Kong.
First it was pepperspray, then teargas. Then, armed forces came in qith rubber bullets. They warn they will come out with live ammunition soon if we do not get off the streets but the people continue to sit tight, disrupting businesses China so strive to takeover and make use of. It’s been 2 days now, but the people plan to continue at least till 1st October or even beyond. The significance is that October 1st is China’s National day, not ours, Hong Kong has not been granted it’s own National day.
Please spread the news. This is a country we’re talking about. These are my people.
You can join this event to wear yellow in support of my people on October 1st.
